The T408 is a turboshaft engine targeted at various helicopter and turboprop applications, such as the CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter for the U.S. Marine Corps. Other potential applications include the Future Transport Helicopter for European armed forces, transport aircraft, marine propulsion and power generation systems.

The engine is produced jointly by GE Aviation and MTU. In a first for the company, MTU also has a development role for a module under a U.S. military engine program. The company is responsible for the development and manufacture of the power turbine and will obtain licenses for maintenance, final assembly and testing of the T408 models to power a future European heavy-lift helicopter. The German engine maker has a program stake of 18 percent. In October 2015, the T408 made its successful maiden flight in the CH-53K Transport helicopter, the so called King Stallion.

The go-ahead for production of the engines was given in February 2018, and in May already, the first production helicopter was handed over to the U.S. Marine Corps. MTU is responsible for the development and production of the power turbine and holds licenses for engine maintenance, final assembly and testing. The U.S. Marine Corps expects its first squadron of CH-53K helicopters to become fully operational by 2019.
